Our activity programme is designed to reflect birth to 3 framework and Curriculum for Excellence. Programmes allow for a balance of play and rest so that the children gain the maximum benefit from their time at nursery. In addition we ensure a balance of adult led and child centred activities, allowing the children to learn at their own pace. Our spacious playrooms offer a fantastic range of activities and resources are carefully chosen to support all aspects of early learning. Our quiet corners provide opportunities for the children to enjoy storytime and reading activities, small group discussion and other tranquil activities of their choice. Our art & craft areas provide opportunities for the children to experiment with a range of creative media including paint, crayons, chalk, pencils, clay and other modelling materials. Other activities available include, environmental projects, cooking, construction, role play, computer, music, sand and water. In addition we employ external specialists to provide French lessons and sports/dance classes.


In promoting our children’s learning and development we use the following two frameworks for practice:-

In our birth to 3 environments our practice reflects the Scottish Executives framework: birth to Three: Positive Outcomes for Scotland’s Children and Families. This framework sets out four features for effective practice:- Relationships, Responsive Care, Respect and Rights. This framework ensures a respectful and sensitive approach to the care and education of our youngest children.

For our 3 – 5 year old children, our care and education strategies reflect the Curriculum For Excellence: 3 to 18. This curriculum supports our children become:- Successful Learners, Confident Individuals, Responsible Citizens and Effective Contributors.

In addition to the above frameworks we use the National Care Standards as a benchmark for practice. These standards reflect the rights of children and young people as set out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The value of “play” in the early years cannot be over-stated as it is widely acknowledged that children learn best through spontaneous play. Play is an essential feature of the nursery programme allowing children to experience a variety of learning situations covering a wide range of the curriculum. Play provides opportunities for child development and also provides opportunities for staff to observe and assess levels of development so that learning experiences can be planned and evaluated. Structured and supervised play provides the opportunity for children to explore and express ideas with either the staff or other children. It also enables the children to use and develop their knowledge and understanding in practical situations. An important aspect of education is personal and social development and play provides opportunities for children to learn to work co-operatively.

Types of Play

Sensory / exploratory:- Examples include heuristic play (treasure baskets), water and sand, messy play, cooking and playdough. These activities provide the opportunity to develop a range of skills including mathematical / scientific concepts, problem solving and language skills.

Construction:- Examples include large wooden building bricks, lego, beads and junk modelling. These activities encourage focus and concentration, the use of logical thinking, develop language skills and provide opportunities for problem-solving.

Imaginative:- Examples include small world play, puppets, role play, dressing up and storytime. During these activities the children are experimenting with decision making, practising their social skills and finding a platform to express their emotions.

Creative:- Examples include art /craft, music and dance. These activities provide opportunities for self-expression, development of self-confidence and sense of achievement.

Physical:- Examples include baby gyms, wheeled toys, large outdoor apparatus, competitive sports, beading, jigsaws and IT activities. These help children to become active and support development of gross and fine motor skills.

There will be opportunities available for you to drop in and participate in play sessions with your child.

Daily Programme

Our day is organised to accommodate children’s choice and child-initiated learning experiences. Routines are in place to ensure personal care needs are met.

7.30 – 9.00:
